It seems that the virtual world of Second Life has made its first case to the “Real Life” courts of the U.S.
Evidently Linden Labs (creators of Second Life) have been sued by someone who purchased land in the virtual world. Remember, the money (lindens) that is used in Second Life is very real. (You can check out the current Linden to USD exchange rate here.)
The judge seems to have already ruled against Linden Labs in a couple of motions. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out in the long run. My prediction is that Linden Labs will just drag it out just long enough to exhaust the plaintiff and settle for a smaller amount. That seems to be the way these things go…
Anyway, if this suit goes well, then I imagine we will see many more IP suits coming out of Second Life.
Here is the full story for those so inclined.
