Apple Keynote

Posted June 11th @ 2:13 pm by Zach Gilliam

So……the much anticipated WWDC keynote didn’t really bring much un-announced innovation this year. Yes, I a mac-fanboy and I love Apple, but I have to say that I was left dissapointed.

But, nonetheless, here are the major highlights that I find interesting (of course, with my commentary! :) ).

  • More games for OSX
    • “Yep, that’s nice.”
    • Always a criticism for OSX…I’m not a gamer, so I don’t really care. But definitely a better way to encourage market share.
  • New Desktop
    • I don’t really understand this one..I probably will after I see the actual video. I’ll withhold judgment until then…
  • New Finder
    • “Now, lets see…”
    • The look
      • Its about time. Just a progression into the next version of the software.
    • Cover Flow
      • This is pretty cool! OSX is known for its full list of “pretty” features, and this is one of them. A welcome addition.
    • Share
      • Nice reworking of the way sharing operates. I just hope it works…
    • .Mac sharing
      • Didn’t .Mac die a long time ago??
  • 64-bit
    • “So?”
    • Another one of those that is expected of the next version of OSX.
  • Boot Camp
    • “Oooohhhhh!”
    • This was the one thing that I was hoping to see. It looks nice!
  • $129
    • “Oh, well…”
    • A little steep, but historically accurate. You better believe I’ll be plopping it down on the day it is relased.
  • Safari
    • “What?!? Couid you say that again? I thought you said…”
    • This is crazy. I have one response, “Why?”. I still can’t figure this one out. iTunes for Windows makes sense, it opened up the iPod to the Windows world. But, Safari? I hate Safari on the Mac, Firefox is so much better. I have a feeling it will be the same thing on the PC. Why waste development efforts? Use those Winblows developers for something useful! Ok, rant over.
  • The iPhone
    • “Wouldn’t be the same without it.”
    • This one is nice. I like the decision to make it all web-based. Although, my only question is about data speed. Without 3G, I wonder if the apps will be laggy. We won’t really know until it is released. This does open up the iPhone to the average joe for dev. I could create an app for the iPhone…this is the way Web 2.0 works. Quit whining! :)
  • And its over
    • So, I guess not too shabby, but I was hoping for more. Oh, well, you know the Apple hype…

I agree, it was less than I had hoped for.
